Roo Mellor won Zandvoort race of 1965 Pro Cup season | Mar 28, 2017
Starting from position 1 on the grid, Roo Mellor's Lotus 33 crossed the line ahead of Yannick Verheijen's BRM P261 to take the win. Paul Skingley rounded out the top three in a Cooper T77, while fastest race lap was set by Alain Maurice.
I have raced at Zandvoort alot recently so I knew a good starting position would be key. The times were close throughout quali but I managed to put a good one together & snatch pole from Alain by 0.038s!
I set my 1st gear to be sure of a good get away & managed to lead into T1. Despite some small errors on my part I was able to keep Yannick at bay. He ended up on my gearbox around lap8 & another small error by me nearly caused Yannick to run into the back of me at Scheivlak. He managed to avoid contact but it caused him a half spin. Sorry for that Yannick, I know how frustrating that can be.
I kept my head down, kept it clean & the only incident I had was arriving at Scheivlak to find a stationary Lotus in the middle of the track. Having learnt from my mistake at Spa on Sunday, I slowed down enough to be sure which side to pass on & I made it past & to the flag unscathed.
If either Paul or Yannick had been in a Lotus, I'm not sure I would have had the pace to beat them.
Grats to all finishers & many thanks to the admins/host :)
Grats Roo, nice job! :)
PS: is the GPLRACER site down, or has it a new adress?
It has been down for a week now. Stefan said it should be up by the end of the week.
For a moment I had the fastest lap in qualifying, but still got demoted to 3rd.
A strong start got me to 2nd and I was behind Roo for some laps, barely keeping up. At some point he lost some momentum so I got closer, but at Schievlak I nearly collided him. I slowed down just in time but lost control, though the kerb set my car on the right direction, limiting the time loss.
But the rest of the race Roo was impossible to keep up with, so I had to settle with 2nd once more.
Thanks Robert, seems Zandvoort is quite a good track for me :)
I was pushing too hard chasing Laurent, slipped away and hit a wall too hard.
